Help Kathan's community face future disasters

You can support the families in Batticaloa to recover from recent flooding and prepare for future disasters.

YOUR KINDNESS WILL HELP A CHILD WHO NEEDS IT MOST

Just 3 months ago, Cyclone Fengal made landfall causing prolonged floods in Batticaloa district. Over 3,400 families were displaced. Homes and infrastructure destroyed.

With help, the community will recover from recent flooding. Your kindness will wrap around the community to help not only recover, but also grow stronger than before.

You'll help the community:

  • Repair water systems, so water is available all year round
  • Grow climate-resistant crops, which turn into healthy nutritious food
  • prepare for the next natural disaster

When the challenges keep coming

Map

Batticaloa district situated in the east coast of the island nation of Sri Lanka. It’s a remote area that often faces the devastating impact of flooding and drought. And over the past two years, access to food has worsened due to an economic crisis across the country.

Many in the community rely heavily on agriculture. For food, and for their livelihoods. Challenges like drought, floods, and an economic crisis all threaten their way of life, as many families are currently experiencing high levels of poverty.

water
Access to water
Natural water tanks will be renovated for irrigation. These special water tanks take inspiration from indigenous techniques and are a nature-based solution that preserve important catchment areas of water sources.

The malfunctioning community water systems will also be renovated to ensure drinking water can be easily accessed by children and families.
crops
Reliable access to food

Community gardens and demonstration farms will be established. Women and young farmers will learn how to grow diverse, climate-resilient indigenous crops, and ultimately build resilient farming practices that can withstand the impacts of climate change.
SOS-1
Protection against future natural disasters

The community will come together to learn about climate action and also carry out disaster risk reduction planning. This includes identifying things they can do to mitigate disasters, and also what to do when disasters hit – from having evacuation plans to coordinating with local authorities.

Volunteer community leaders make up the Village Disaster Management Committee and take the lead in keeping the community safe.
