The flow on effects of the drought added weight to Agnetta’s shoulders. Almost literally. Collecting water became harder. Without the bulls, Agnetta must collect water from the Muoni River 6km away, alone.
“Carrying water on your back is not a joke, I started developing some serious back pains. Before I had the bulls to carry the water, but with them dead, I must do it on my own.”
The struggles do not stop there. Agnetta’s children missed out on school too because the family struggled to earn enough income. The school often sent her children home and sometimes the children would miss school for a whole month.
And with the heavy rains that followed the drought her house created cracks in the walls which brought a new set of problems for her family.

The first part of the project involves implementing a new irrigation system through sand harvesting. Water will be extracted from the Muoni Riverbed using a submersible sump tank. The tank is made from a porous stone material buried in the dry river sand and filters water that is trapped within the sand from when the river flows in the rainy season.
This project is modelled after another successful ChildFund sand water harvesting project in Mulala, Kenya which now delivers water to over 8,000 people.
With your contribution, Agnetta will have the tools to irrigate her farm, boost productivity, and increase her income.
The other part of the project is supporting farmers with improved agricultural techniques and drought-resistant seeds.
Farmers including Agnetta, will receive training on different techniques to improve their crop yield, even in hard times.
“I will use that knowledge to pick myself up again and with the stable source of water coming with the project, I know I will do a lot and be able to grow food for my family. Through the income from our farming, I’ll be able to purchase more bulls that will bring in more income to ensure my kids can stay in school.” shares Agnetta.
